Lamentation is set in London in 1546, about a year after the previous novel, Heartstone, ended. When I heard the exciting news that there was a new Shardlake novel – Tombland – coming in October, I remembered that I still needed to read Lamentation, the sixth book in the series, so I put it on my 20 Books of Summer list to ensure that I would read it sooner rather than later and be up to date in time for the new one. ![]() ![]() This outlook will enable us to view the so-called imperfections of the majority of men, i.e., their moral and intellectual shortcomings and the facial appearance resulting therefrom, without surprise and certainly without indignation: for we shall always bear in mind where we are and consequently regard every man first and foremost as a being who exists only as a consequence of his culpability and whose life is an expiation of the crime of being born. ![]() ![]() Indeed, late-19 th and early-20 th century philosophers, writers, composers and artists such as Nietzsche, Wagner, Brahms, Freud, Wittgenstein, Horkheimer, Hardy, Mann, Rilke, Proust, Tolstoy, Borges, Mahler, Langer and Schnberg were influenced by. Here are the books whose ideas and lessons stuck with me. I discovered a few things that might aid your own process if you decide to embrace a non-human narrator (especially in an apocalyptic setting). While I was working on Absolute Unit, I watched a lot of parasite-themed horror movies ( The Thing, obviously, but also a lot of stuff by David Cronenberg and James Gunn) and read a lot of books told from the perspective of insects, rabbits, robots, and more. The final product, Absolute Unit, is a combination of body horror and crime fiction the parasite gets tired of living on scraps and decides to use its budding telekinetic powers to conquer the world. ![]() ![]() I figured a non-human narrator would have some interesting things to say about humanity. This is one part where I felt like that Brandon Mull manipulated with my emotions where he gives Kendra what she's always been fascinated with (Kendra loves unicorns and she didn't even know if they truly existed) because Gavin died in the last book. Although he's great as he's a unicorn and Fairy Queen's only son, he's no Gavin. We are introduced with Bracken in this book. Seth kept me completely hooked and entertained. Kendra and Seth Sorensen, brother and sister duo whom I didn't like at all in the first book have grown on me a lot especially Seth. I feel like life's not going to be the same without this series. I can't get the world of Fablehaven out of my head and heart. I hate saying goodbye especially to the series that I have come to love so much. ![]() |
